The Church of St. Anne was built by the Crusaders on the traditional site of the birthplace of Anne, Mary’s mother. It was turned into a Moslem theological school by Saladin in 1192. It was abandoned and fell into ruin until the Ottomans donated it to the French in 1856.

The church is located in the Moslem Quarter of the Old City, next to the Bethesda pool, where, according to the New Testament, Jesus healed a paralytic (John 5-1-15).
