December 13, 1947 Terror Attacks on Road through Ramleh
“SEVEN OF THE TEN PERSONS IN A BRITISH OVERSEAS AIRWAYS TRUCK THAT WAS ATTACKED BAD BURNED YESTERDAY ARE STILL MISSING AND THREE BODIES FOUND WERE TOO BADLY CHARRED FOR IDENTIFICATION.
The Trans World Airline has asked the permission of Air Commodore Dawson, commanding the Royal Air Force here, to use the RAF landing strip near Jerusalem so that a DC-4 can be brought in to shuttle passengers between Jerusalem and Lydda airport. The road to Lydda passes through Ramleh where transport convoys have been attacked and where TWA drivers have already had trouble on the road.
Commodore Dawson is in Amman. Trans-Jordan, over the weekend but the TWA managers here, John Keegan, said that both TWA and the British Overseas Airways hoped to obtain the Commodore’s consent as the trip by road is now too hazardous to risk with passengers.”
