Samson and Delilah, Rembrandt, 1628

Samson_and_Delilah

In Judges 16:4–21, the Philistine rulers offer Delilah silver to discover the secret of Samson’s strength. After repeated questioning, Samson reveals that he’s been a Nazirite, consecrated to God from birth, and that cutting his unshorn hair would leave him powerless. Delilah puts him to sleep on her lap and calls for a man to shave his seven locks, allowing the Philistines to seize and blind him. The biblical text explains that Samson’s strength has departed because God has left him. Rembrandt’s Samson and Delilah (1628) depicts the moment before the cutting, with Samson asleep as Delilah lifts his hair for a man approaching with shears.
