According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word “Pogrom” was first used in the Times of London on 17 March 1882 (“ That the ‘Pogromen must be stopped…”).
The Yiddish plural ending betrays the route that the word took into English. In the former Soviet Union, the word “pogrom” was applied to violence carried out by reactionary groups against opponents of the Tsarist regime.
