Because of the havoc Hitler had unleashed on behalf of Germans outside Germany, in 1944 Churchill endorsed—with Roosevelt and Stalin agreeing—ethnic cleansing.
Postwar stability would be built by scrubbing Germans from non-German countries. “Expulsion,” said Churchill, “is the method which … will be the most satisfactory and lasting.”
