January 18, 1948 Attack on Convoy on Jaffa Road

Jerusalem Convoy 1948“Today’s most serious attack was on a convoy moving toward Jerusalem on the Jaffa road.  One Jew was killed, one was missing and nine others, including Miss Strauss, were wounded.  The convoy was caught in crossfire from both sides of the road but kept moving.

The road was dangerous at times during the day, and some vehicles leaving Jerusalem this morning had to turn back.

Another attack late tonight cost the lives of one Jew and three Arabs, with two Jews and two Arabs injured.  These occurred when a convoy of seven trucks was attacked near Beit Shemesh, fourteen miles west of Jerusalem.  That is the same area where the police last night reported Jewish forces were on the move.”
