December 25, 1947 Stern Band gunmen

“Two British soldiers were killed and at least three more were wounded tonight when Stern Band gunmen fired on a group of Tommies who were celebrating Christmas in a Tel Aviv cafe.

These killings brought the Christmas Day total in Palestine to sixteen dead and fifty-one wounded…

The other casualties fell into the familiar pattern of sniping and attacks by ‘unknown persons,’ except for nine Jewish prisoners reported [unofficially] to have been wounded when two grenades were hurled into the courtyard of the Jaffa prison during the exercise period of this afternoon.”
