Quotations from the Book of Isaiah

Isaiah_Scroll (1)• “Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow”

Isaiah 1-17

• “And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counselors as at the beginning- afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city”

Isaiah 1-26

• “And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths- for out of Zion shall go forth the law and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people- and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks- nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord” (everlasting peace)

Isaiah 2-2-5

• “In that day the Lord will snatch away their finery- the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces, the earrings and bracelets and veils, the headdresses and ankle chains and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms, the signet rings and nose rings, the fine robes and the capes and cloaks, the purses and mirrors, and the linen garments and tiaras and shawls”

Isaiah 3-18-23

• “Instead of artificial curls there will be baldness, instead of a girdle a rope. Instead of a mantle a girdling of sackcloth, branding instead of beauty” (prophecy for rich women)

Isaiah 3-24

• “Field to field and house to house”(aristocracy’s cruel ambitions)

Isaiah 5-8

• “Not one of them grows tired or stumbles, not one slumbers or sleeps; not a belt is loosened at the waist, not a sandal thong is broken. Their arrows are sharp, all their bows are strung; their horses’ hoofs seem like flint, their chariot wheels like a whirlwind”

Isaiah 5-27-28

• “And one cried unto another, and said, holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts- the whole earth is full of his glory. And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. Then said I, Woe is me! For I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips- for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. Then flew one of the Seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar- And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me. And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed. Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate, And the Lord have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land. But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten- as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves- so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof” (call of Isaiah)

Isaiah 6-3-13

• “If ye will not have faith, ye shall not endure”

• “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given- and the government shall be upon his shoulder- and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace”

Isaiah 9-6

• “And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots- And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord- and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears- But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth- and he shall smite the earth- with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins. The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together- and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain- for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea” (The coming of the virtuous king)

Isaiah 19-19-20

• “You saw that the City of David had many breaches in its defenses; you stored up water in the Lower Pool. You counted the buildings in Jerusalem and tore down houses to strengthen the wall”

Isaiah 22-9-10

• “This is what the Lord, the Lord Almighty, says- Go, say to this steward, to Shebna, who is in charge of the palace- What are you doing here and who gave you permission to cut out a grave for yourself here, hewing your grave on the height and chiseling your resting place in the rock?”

Isaiah 22-15-16

• “O Lord, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth. For thou hast made of a city an heap; of a defenced city a ruin- a palace of strangers to be no city; it shall never be built. Therefore shall the strong people glorify thee, the city of the terrible nations shall fear thee”

Isaiah 40-11

• “All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity. To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?”

Isaiah 40-17-18

• “Keep silence before me, O islands; and let the people renew their strength- let them come near; then let them speak- let us come near together to judgment. Who raised up the righteous man from the east, called him to his foot, gave the nations before him, and made him rule over kings? He gave them as the dust to his sword, and as driven stubble to his bow. He pursued them, and passed safely; even by the way that he had not gone with his feet. Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the Lord, the first, and with the last; I am he. The isles saw it, and feared; the ends of the earth were afraid, drew near, and came. They helped every one his neighbor; and every one said to his brother, Be of good courage. So the carpenter encouraged the goldsmith, and he that smootheth with the hammer him that smote the anvil, saying, it is ready for the sodering- and he fastened it with nails, that it should not be moved” (calling of Cyrus)

Isaiah 41-1-7

• “You are my witnesses, and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed,

Isaiah 43-10-11

• “This is what the Lord says- Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty- I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God. Who then is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and lay out before me what has happened since I established my ancient people, and what is yet to come- yes, let him foretell what will come. Do not tremble, do not be afraid. Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago? You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me? No, there is no other Rock; I know not one. All who make idols are nothing, and the things they treasure are worthless. Those who would speak up for them are blind; they are ignorant, to their own shame”

Isaiah 44-6-9

• “Thou art My servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified”

Surely he hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we were healed” (description of God’s chosen prophet)

Isaiah 53-3-5

• “O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colors, and lay thy foundations with sapphires. And I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones. And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children. In righteousness shalt thou be established- thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear- and from terror; for it shall not come near thee. Behold, they shall surely gather together, but not by me- whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake. Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy. No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord” (new Jerusalem)

Isaiah 56-10-11

• “For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him- I hid me, and was wroth, and he went on frowardly in the way of his heart. I have seen his ways, and will heal him- I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners. I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the Lord; and I will heal him. But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked”

Isaiah 57-17-21

• “Is not this the fast I have chosen- to loosen the bonds of wickedness and undo the cords of violence; to let the oppressed go free, and every yoke to snap? To break for the hungry thy bread, and the homeless to bring to thy house; when thou seest the naked, to cover him, and to hide not thyself from thy flesh?” (What use were the fasts if you are still sinning?)

Isaiah 66-14

• “For I know their works and their thoughts- it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory. And I will set a sign among them, and I will send those that escape of them unto the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, that draw the bow, to Tubal, and Javan, to the isles afar off, that have not heard my fame, neither have seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles. And they shall bring all your brethren for an offering unto the Lord out of all nations upon horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and upon mules, and upon swift beasts, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, saith the Lord, as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the Lord. And I will also take of them for priests and for Levites, saith the Lord. For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord. And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcasses of the men that have transgressed against me- for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh” (eschatological discourse)
