The Aftermath of the Blois Incident,117, Letter from the Leaders of Parisian Jewry
Today is a day of good news, which the Great King has sent to His people Israel, for He has inclined the heart of a mortal king in our favor. We traveled to the king at Poissy and fell at his feet concerning this matter.
When we saw that he received us peacefully, we asked to speak with him privately. He replied, “Speak openly instead.”
The king then summoned all his officials who were present in the fortress and said to them: “Listen to what Count Theobald has done. May he and his descendants be uprooted. If he acted properly, then all is well, but if he acted improperly, let him be punished, for I too am disturbed by what he has done.
“Now, you Jews of my territory have no reason to fear because of what that oppressor has done in his own domain. People previously made the same accusation against the Jews of Pontoise and the Jews of Janville. When the matter was brought before me, however, the accusation was found to be entirely false.
“Therefore, all you Jews living in my territory may be assured that I hold no such suspicion against you. Even if Christians should find a slain Christian in a city or in the countryside, I shall bring no accusation against the Jews because of it. You should therefore have no fear concerning this matter.”
