Sumptuary Laws, Castile, 1432 Communal Ordinance
No woman, except an unmarried woman or a bride during the first year of her marriage, may wear costly garments made of gold cloth, olive-colored fabric, fine linen, silk or fine wool. Women may not decorate their garments with velvet, brocade or olive-colored cloth.
They may not wear gold or pearl brooches or strings of pearls across their foreheads. They may not wear dresses with trains extending more than one-third of a vara along the ground, fringed Moorish garments, high-collared coats, bright reddish cloth or skirts made of bermeia thread, except for skirts and stockings. Sleeves on Moorish garments may not be more than two handbreadths wide.
Women may wear silver brooches and silver belts. No individual brooch or belt may contain more than four ounces of silver.
No Jewish man aged fifteen or older may wear a cloak made of gold thread, olive-colored material or silk. He may not wear a cloak trimmed with gold, olive-colored material, silk, rich fabric or gold cloth.
These restrictions don’t apply to clothing worn during celebrations, at receptions for a lord or lady, at dances or on similar social occasions. Because customs concerning clothing differ among the communities, we find it impossible to establish a general ordinance covering every necessary detail.
We therefore ordain that, for as long as this ordinance remains in force, each community shall establish clothing regulations that will remind its members that we are in exile because of our sins. Communities that wish to establish stricter regulations have the authority to do so.
Since many people spend large amounts of money at betrothals, weddings, births and other joyful occasions, we agree that every community shall establish regulations suited to its circumstances. In any community that doesn’t yet have such regulations, a meeting shall be held within thirty days after this ordinance is read and appropriate rules shall be adopted.
We agree that this ordinance shall apply to all the holy communities in the kingdom of our lord the king. It shall remain in force for ten consecutive years, beginning in each community on the day it is publicly read and announced.
No person may oppose the ordinance in whole or in part. Anyone who violates it, causes another person to violate it or attempts to annul any part of it shall be placed under anathema and excommunicated, since the ordinance was established under the authority granted to the honored Rabbi Don Abraham.
