Qumran Cave 4

The largest collection of texts was found in this cave, which yielded fragments of some 550 manuscripts. The cave served as a library for the inhabitants of Qumran, and was filled with wooden shelves.

This cave was artificially hollowed out of the limestone. It is located immediately opposite Qumran, and is the most accessible cave from the site. The cave consists of a large chamber which opens onto two smaller ones.
