Pope Honorius III, 1219 Papal Document
To the Archbishop of Toledo, legate of the Apostolic See.
On behalf of our dearly beloved son in Christ, Ferdinand, illustrious king of Castile, and also on your behalf, it was set before us that the Jews living in the kingdom of Castile are taking so gravely the statute made in the general council concerning the signs they are to wear, that some of them would rather choose to flee to the Moors than carry such signs. Others, on account of this matter, are forming conspiracies and gatherings, from which serious loss could be caused to the king himself, whose revenues consist in large part of these Jews, and scandal could arise in the kingdom.
Therefore, both on the king’s behalf and on yours, humble petition was made to us that, with our permission, you might be allowed to refrain from carrying out the constitution issued on this matter, since you cannot proceed in it without serious scandal.
Wishing, therefore, with fatherly care to provide for the peace of the said king and kingdom, we command you, by the authority of these present letters, to suspend the execution of the aforesaid constitution for as long as you judge it useful to do so, unless perhaps you receive a special apostolic command to carry it out, notwithstanding any letters obtained from the Apostolic See in which the tenor of these presents is not mentioned.
Given at the Lateran, on the thirteenth day before the Kalends of April, in the third year of our pontificate.
