Pope Honorius III, 1218 Papal Document
To the same, Rodrigo, Archbishop of Toledo.
In the general council, it was decreed with prudent deliberation that Jews should be distinguished from Christians by a difference in dress, and that they should be compelled to make satisfaction to the churches for the tithes and offerings owed, which the churches had been accustomed to receive from Christians from houses and other possessions before those properties came into the hands of Jews by whatever title.
As we have heard, the Jews living in your province, supported by the favor of certain Christians, do not take care to observe these requirements.
Therefore, by the authority of these present letters, we command you to compel both those Jews and any other Jews living within the boundaries of your legation to observe the aforesaid decrees, by withdrawing from them the participation of Christians. You are also to restrain, by ecclesiastical censure and without allowing appeal, Christians who presume to associate with them contrary to your prohibition.
Given at the Lateran, on the seventh day before the Kalends of February, in the second year of our pontificate.
