Mishnah Qiddushin 1-7- The Obligation of the Commandments

Mishnah Qiddushin specifies the difference in obligations imposed by talmudic law upon women and men.

[Concerning] all the commandments regarding a son which are obligatory on the father, men are obligated and women are exempt. [Concerning] all the Torah commandments of a son toward his father, both men and women are obligated. [Concerning] all positive commandments dependent upon time, men are obligated but women are exempt. And [concerning] all positive commandments which are not dependent upon time, both men and women are obligated. But [concerning] all the negative commandments, whether dependent on time or not dependent on time, both men and women are obligated, except [for the commandments], “You shall not destroy [the corners of your beard]” (Lev. 19:27) and “You shall not round [the corners of your head]”⁵⁸ and, [for priests], “you shall not defile yourself for the dead” (Lev. 21:1).⁵⁹
