Today is a day of good news, to be proclaimed to God’s people Israel. The great King has turned the heart of a human king in our favor.

We traveled to the king at Poissy and fell at his feet concerning this matter. When we saw that he received us graciously, we told him that we wished to speak with him privately. He replied, “No. Speak aloud!”

The king then summoned all his officials who were stationed in the fortress and said to them: “All of you, listen to what Count Theobald has done. May he and his descendants be uprooted! If he acted properly, then it is well. If he acted wrongly, let him suffer the punishment, for I too am alarmed by what he has done.

“You Jews who live in my kingdom have no reason to fear because of what that oppressor did in his territory. People have made this same accusation against the Jews of Pontoise and against those of Janville, claiming that they committed such an act. Yet when the matter was brought before me, the accusation was proven entirely false.

“Therefore, all you Jews in my land should know that I don’t suspect you of such a deed. Even if Christians find a murdered Christian in a town or in the countryside, I won’t hold the Jews responsible. You should have no fear concerning this matter.”
