Host Desecration, Spain
Master of Vallbona de les Monges, possibly Guillem Seguer, Altarpiece of the Corpus Christi, c. 1335–1345. Tempera, stucco relief, gilding and silver leaf on wood. Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, Barcelona, inv. 009920-000. This Catalan Gothic altarpiece was made for the Corpus Christi chapel of the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria de Vallbona de les Monges. Several scenes reflect medieval Christian legends about Jews desecrating the consecrated host, a false antisemitic accusation that linked Eucharistic devotion with anti-Jewish polemic.
