To all who shall see these present letters, John, Duke of Brittany and Count of Richmond, sends greetings.

Know that, at the request of the bishops, abbots, barons and vassals of Brittany, and after carefully considering the welfare of the country, we expel all Jews from Brittany.

Neither we nor our heirs shall ever allow a Jew to remain on our lands in Brittany, nor shall we permit any of our subjects to keep Jews upon their lands.

We entirely cancel and discharge all debts owed to Jews established in Brittany, regardless of the manner in which or the reason for which those debts were contracted.

All lands mortgaged to Jews, and all movable or immovable property held by them as security, shall be returned to the debtors or their heirs. This doesn’t apply to lands or other pledges that were sold to Christians by judgment of our court.

No one shall be accused or brought to trial for having killed a Jew before this day.

We shall petition our lord the king of France, sincerely and with all our power, to confirm this ordinance by his letters.

On behalf of our father and ourselves, we also guarantee that debts contracted with Jews in Brittany shall never be collected from lands belonging to our father.

We have sworn in good faith to observe this ordinance, as written here, forever. If we should violate it, all the bishops of Brittany, acting together or separately, may excommunicate us and place under interdict the lands that we hold within their dioceses, regardless of any privilege that we have obtained or may obtain in the future.

We further will and grant that our heirs who succeed us in the future shall, when they reach lawful age, swear to observe this ordinance faithfully as it is written here.

The barons, vassals and all others required to swear allegiance to the count of Brittany shall neither take the oath nor render homage to our heirs until those heirs, having been formally requested by at least two bishops or two barons acting in the name of the others, have sworn to observe this ordinance faithfully.

Once that oath has been taken, the barons and all who owe allegiance to the count of Brittany shall immediately swear allegiance and render homage to our heirs.

Finally, the bishops, barons and all the vassals of our duchy have sworn and agreed that they shall never receive Jews upon their lands in Brittany or permit anyone else to receive them.

Given at Ploërmel on the Tuesday before the Resurrection of Our Lord, in the year 1239.
