The believer said:

“You can recognize the truth of our religion from the conduct of its adherents. The Jews observe the Ten Commandments. They don’t worship anyone besides God, swear falsely, murder or rob. They educate their children in reverence for God, and their women preserve their chastity.

“They receive Jewish travelers into their homes, give food and clothing to the poor, care for those in need and contribute money to ransom captives. If a Jew travels from one community to another, his fellow Jews provide for him according to their means.

“These virtues aren’t found among you to the same degree. Your poor go from door to door without receiving what they need, while captives belonging to your people may remain in captivity because no one will pay to redeem them.”

The apostate replied:

“What you have said is true. Nevertheless, you lend money at interest and take excessive profit from us.”

The believer answered:

“There are also Christians who lend money at interest and deceive members of their own faith. Wealthy Jews, however, lend to their fellow Jews without interest.”
