In 1866, British cartographer Captain Charles W. Wilson first identified the ruins of a synagogue at Capernaum. The synagogue appears to have been built on the ruins of a first century CE synagogue, possibly the synagogue where Jesus preached, according to the Gospel of Mark.

In 1991, an Italian archaeologist found 10,000 bronze coins from the 4th and 5th centuries under the pavement of the synagogue.
