Abraham Abulafia was a Spanish Kabbalist from the 13th century who was responsible for developing a special kabbalistic path which he referred to as kabbalah nevuit – “prophetic Kabbalah” – sometimes referred to in the scholarship as the “ecstatic Kabbalah,” because the emphasis is placed on attaining a state of ecstatic union with the divine, which Abulafia understood, following Maimonides, to be the spiritual meaning of prophecy.
