U.S. Jews Picket Ship to Protest Exports to Arabs, Associated Press, San Francisco Chronicle, July 2, 1948.

LONG BEACH, July 2 (AP)-Pickets carrying placards of the American Jewish Labor Council today halted loading of steel pipe aboard the SS Governor Bibb.

Henry Fazer, executive secretary of the council in Los Angeles, said the picketing was in protest of shipment of pipe to Arabia. Longshoremen declined to pass the picket line.

The Trans-Arabian Pipe Line Co., San Francisco, said 64,000 tons of pipe had been sold to the Tennessee Gas Transmission co., Houston, Texas, for use at Houston and Beaumont, Texas.

(In Houston, Gardiner Symonds, Tennessee president, said the 255 miles of pipe, 30 and 31 inches in diameter, will be used to increase the supply of fuel for the Eastern United States, and will go into Tennessee lines which run from the Mexican border to West Virginia.)

Officials of the Isthmian Line the ship’s owners, said the Department of Commerce had granted no export license for shipment of such pipe abroad in the third quarter, hence the pipe could not be sent to Arabia from Long Beach or any other American port.

Jim Corley, president of the CIO-Longshoremen’s local union, said union dock workers were observing the picket line pending an investigation of the picketing.

Fazer said the American Jewish Labor Council organized the picket line and would continue it on the grounds the pipe was originally made and destined for Arabia. He said the council believed the pipe might be trans-shipped from Texas to Arabia.

W. R. Marlow, manager of the Waterfront Employers’ Association, said refusal of union longshoremen to pass the picket line constituted a violation of the June 23 order by Federal Judge George B. Harris at San Francisco for continuation of the status quo of the waterfront labor contract during pending negotiations.
