Papyrus Harris, late 13th-early 12th century BCE

Papyrus_Harris

Ramesses IV wrote this papyrus in the name of Ramesses III, describing the important events of his reign. One of the events is the capture and resettlement of “Sea Peoples.” The “strongholds” they were settled in may have been fortified towns in Canaan and these “Sea Peoples” may have been the Philistines.

Papyrus Harris I was found in 1855 by natives in a hole in the floor of cliff-tomb near Dur el Medineh, Thebes. It was purchased by A.C. Harris of Alexandria, Egypt, hence its name.
