CAIRO, July 9-Count Folke Bernadotte sent a new and urgent appeal to the Arabs and Jews today for an unconditional cease fire in Palestine effective at 8 a. m. EDT (5 a. m. PDT) tomorrow.

The United Nations mediator announced at the same time that he would fly tomorrow to Lake Success to consult U. N. leaders.

The Arabs bombed Tel Aviv, the Jewish capital, today. Ground fighting swelled on the southern, central and northern fronts as Bernadotte made his desperate attempt to revive the truce which expired at 2 a. m. EDT (11 p. m. Thursday PDT).

Bernadotte made his peace appeal after a hurried flight to Amman. Trans-Jordan, where he conferred with King Abdullah, whom the Arabs named today their supreme military leader. Abdullah and the British Minister also conferred.

DEMILITARIZATION

(Associated Press reported Bernadotte discussed with Abdullah the proposed demilitarization of Jerusalem, and announced he still has hopes of preventing lighting there. (Bernadotte did not specify to newsmen the basis for his hopes, He would give no details of his talks with Abdullah, other than to describe them as private discussion of demilitarisation of the Holy City. He said he discussed this with Abdullah because Trans-Jordan’s Arab Legion now is in Jerusalem.)

Three serial bombs crashed down on Tel Aviv. One killed three children and wounded several when it hit a school, Tel Aviv dispatches said. Three other persons were reported killed and 10 or more wounded. An unidentified plane scouted Haifa harbor without dropping bombs.

CLASH IN SOUTH

Egyptian and Jewish troops clashed on the southern front, Iraqi troops opened a heavy bombardment near Natanya, on the central front, in an attempt to cut the vitally important Haifa-Tel Aviv coastal highway.

Haifa reported Israeli troops had taken the offensive in Galillee, in the north, and had captured a number of Arab villages.

Egypt announced its army in the south attacked the moment the truce ended.

An Israeli war communique claimed, however, that the Egyptians attacked in force yesterday and captured two Jewish villages. Israeli troops counter-attacked last night and captured three other villages dominating the Egyptian supply line along the Majdal-Hebron road, the communique said. It was said 30 Egyptians were killed, many wounded, and a number captured. The Jews captured a quantity of ammunition, it was asserted.

There was desultory shelling and rifle firing in Jerusalem.

(Associated Press reported a dispatched from the walled Old City, held by the Arabs, quoted Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Bey Tell as saying that Arab Legion field guns were ordered to refrain from opening up on new Jerusalem unless the Jews began mortaring the Old City.

U. S. Troops, U. N. Personnel Evacuated From Palestine

WASHINGTON. July 9 (AP)-The Navy said today that American military and United Nations personnel have been successfully evacuated from Palestine. No number was given.

A cable to the Navy ship said the evacuees were taken aboard the Marquette, a cargo ship, and the Palau, an escort carrier. These ships have now left Haifa and are en route to Rhodes, the Navy said.

Three American destroyers that have been on patrol duty off the Palestine coast at request of Count Bernadotte have rejoined the U. S. Sixth Task Fleet, the Navy said. The major portion of this fleet is now in the Eastern Mediterranean.

(Haifa dispatches reported there remained in Palestine less than 40 of the U. N. team which a few days ago had totaled at least 200, nearly two-thirds of it American. Most of those remaining behind are in Jerusalem.

(John Reedman, of the U. N. secretariat, came to Haifa from Tel Aviv and said he would remain in Palestine. This group, he said, will stay at Mount Scopus in Jerusalem.)
