Israeli Men Storm U.N. Building, Combined American Press Despatch, NY Times, July 9, 1948.

King David Hotel 1948JERUSALEM, July 8-Troops of Israel’s army stormed into the United Nations-occupied King David Hotel late today while the blue and while United Nations flag flew from the rooftop.

A patrol of twenty Israeli soldiers went to the third floor of the building, apparently searching the premises, the United Nations guard on duty at the building said.

Correspondents who went to the scene were ordered away by the Israeli elements who threatened to use force. Associated Press photographer James Pringle was forcibly prevented from taking pictures.

Arab mortar fire on Jerusalem’s Jewish residential districts began shortly before sunset today. Some twenty shells fell in the fashion-able Rehavia district and several persons were reported injured.

Some small arms fire was audible during the afternoon and first reports described it as sniping between forward positions of both Israeli and Arab forces.
