Earliest Monk Cells, 4th century CE

St._Anthony's_Monastery_2006Maximous Elantony, a Coptic monk of the St. Anthony’s Monastery in Cairo, uncovered monk’s cells underneath the 15th century Apostle Church.

The cells were built of brick and plaster and contained basins and a brick stove.
