Britain Will Send Arms to Arab States, Associated Press, San Francisco Chronicle, Jan. 14, 1948.

LONDON, Jan. 14 (AP)—Britain will continue to fulfill her contracts to sell arms and military equipment to certain Arab states, despite their threat to march against Palestine after the British mandate ends, a foreign office spokesman said today.

Three factors govern the supplying of British arms to Iraq, Egypt and Trans-Jordon in particular, and to other Midwestern countries in general, the spokesman said-

1—In the cases of the countries named, equipment is sold under specific clauses in friendship treaties with Britain.

2—In each case orders for military material “were carefully scrutinized” before being carried out. Orders were not approved if it was clear the arms were to be used in or against Palestine, the spokesman said.

3—Britain maintains the right to suspend fulfillment of her arms contracts if any of the states violate the United Nations Charter.

The spokesman refused to comment on reported Jewish assertions that at least $23,000,000 worth of military material had been sold to Iraq, Egypt and Trans-Jordon since the war.
