September 26, 1937 Acting District Commissioner of Galilee Fatally Shot

Arab Rebels During 1936 Revolt“Sporadic terrorism continues throughout the first nine months of 1937, developing in the late autumn into a second phase of the rebellion. The Acting District commissioner of Galilee (Lewis Yelland) and his police escort were fatally shot by Arab gunmen in Nazareth on the 26th of September. Five days later the government announced that they found it necessary to institute action against certain persons whose activities have been prejudicial to the maintenance of public security in Palestine and who must therefore be regarded as morally responsible for the campaign of terrorism and murder.
