No mention of Palestinian policy of terrorism (letter to the editor), Financial Times, Aug. 31, 2004.

Sir, Once again, you focus blame on Ariel Sharon, the Israeli prime minister, and US support for his policies, with no mention of the Palestinians and their policy of terrorism of the past four years (“Israeli tail wags American dog”, August 26). At a time when Israel has no partner for peace, Mr Sharon should be commended, not criticised, for taking bold risks for the interests of both Israelis and Palestinians.

Israeli settlements do not undermine a negotiated settlement for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Indeed, Israel has demonstrated that it will be prepared to dismantle settlements as part of a comprehensive peace agreement with the Palestinians – just as it dismantled the thriving Sinai town of Yamit as part of its peace agreement with Egypt.

As soon as the Palestinians create a responsible governing structure, end terrorism and demonstrate that they are serious about living alongside Israel in peace and security, both sides can return to the negotiating table.
