Monastery of the Cross, 11th century

Monastery of the Cross

The Monastery of the Cross was constructed outside of the walls of the Old City in the 11th century, on the ruins of a Byzantine church. It was financed with help from the King of Georgia, and by the 14th century had become the center of the Christian Georgian community in Jerusalem. In 1685, it was taken over by the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate.
