Deuteronomy 12:10-14; 27:15-26

Deuteronomy 12-10-14

When they still have not entered the promised land, God already had in mind a special place in which His Presence would rest. That place became Jerusalem-

10When you cross the Jordan and settle in the land that the LORD your God is allotting to you, and He grants you safety from all your enemies around you and you live in security, 11then you must bring everything that I command you to the site where the LORD your God will choose to establish His name- your burnt offerings and other sacrifices, your tithes and contributions, and all the choice votive offerings that you vow to the LORD. 12And you shall rejoice before the LORD your God with your sons and daughters and with your male and female slaves, along with the Levite in your settlements, for he has no territorial allotment among you.

13Take care not to sacrifice your burnt offerings in any place you like, 14but only in the place that the LORD will choose in one of your tribal territories. There you shall sacrifice your burnt offerings and there you shall observe all that I enjoin upon you.

Deuteronomy 27-15-26

Moses commanded the Israelites that upon entering the promised land they should renew the covenant with God by means of reading the law before the nation and proclaiming a series of blessings and curses. The listing format of the curses is reminiscent of our figurine-

15Cursed be anyone who makes a sculptured or molten image, abhorred by the LORD, a craftsman’s handiwork, and sets it up in secret.—And all the people shall respond, Amen.

16Cursed be he who insults his father or mother.—And all the people shall say, Amen.

17Cursed be he who moves his fellow countryman’s landmark.—And all the people shall say, Amen.

18Cursed be he who misdirects a blind person on his way.—And all the people shall say, Amen.

19Cursed be he who subverts the rights of the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow.—And all the people shall say, Amen.

20Cursed be he who lies with his father’s wife, for he has removed his father’s garment.—And all the people shall say, Amen.

21Cursed be he who lies with any beast.—And all the people shall say, Amen.

22Cursed be he who lies with his sister, whether daughter of his father or of his mother.—And all the people shall say, Amen.

23Cursed be he who lies with his mother-in-law.—And all the people shall say, Amen.

24Cursed be he who strikes down his fellow countryman in secret.—And all the people shall say, Amen.

25Cursed be he who accepts a bribe in the case of the murder of an innocent person.—And all the people shall say, Amen.

26Cursed be he who will not uphold the terms of this Teaching and observe them.—And all the people shall say, Amen.
