December 23rd 1920 The Government of Ireland Act
The six northeastern counties of Ireland are partitioned to create Northern Ireland (Protestant). While the larger portion becomes the republic of Ireland (catholic). Thus begins the armed struggle between the Irish republican army and Great Britain which continues to this day.
