Azriyau Annal Fragment, 738 BCE

A fragmentary annal text describes a rebellion against Assyria led by a certain Azriyau in the area of Hamath. The identity of Azriyau is uncertain, although his name is almost certainly Israelite. This can be determined by the theophoric element – yahu – the name of the God of Israel.

Azriyau led a rebellion against Tiglath-Pileser III. His revolt failed and he was captured, and the area was reorganized as an Assyrian province.
