Montfort Crusader Fortress, 12th century

Bible and Beyond

Monfort Crusader Fortress

Montfort (meaning “strong mountain”) was built on the cliff overlooking the Keziv Stream in the Upper Galilee. It was originally built as an agricultural farm. The fortress was captured by the Moslems in the year 1187.

After the Third Crusade, the capital of the diminished Crusader kingdom was set in Acre, and Montfort became significant due to its proximity to the capital.
