Lid of Philistine Anthropoid Coffin, 12th century BCE

Egyptian occupation of Canaan came to an end during the 12th century, during the reign of either Ramesses III or Ramesses IV. This was apparently due to the infiltration of the Sea Peoples and the Israelites. This lid from a Philistine anthropoid coffin was discovered in Beth Shean. Anthropoid coffins were made of hollowed-out logs of sycamore.
