Letter from Julian to the Jews, 363 CE

“Julian to the communities of the Jews. More even than in the past, the yoke of servitude has become most galling to you because you were subjected to unannounced demands for payment, and were forced to deliver an inestimable amount of gold to the treasury. I have seen much of this with my own eyes, and learnt of even more when I found the lists that were kept against you. I have also prevented a tax that was to have been demanded of you, and forced this impious crime to be stopped. And I put into the fire the lists that were kept in my archives against you, so that no-one may be able in future to bring such accusations of impiety against you…”
