JERUSALEM-Jewish planes went into action Saturday night to supply the garrison of Kastel, strategic Arab village captured by Haganah forces after a sustained attack.

A force of 400 Arabs was reported counter-attacking the village which dominates the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway.

Meanwhile, the British high commissioner for Palestine in an unprecedented broadcast, called on both Jews and Arabs to cease fire.

Sir Alan Cunningham urged both sides in the struggle for the Holy Land to conform to the United Nations resolution, and thus avoid harming their causes in the forthcoming UN deliberations on Palestine.

An Arab spokesman said unless the truce was preceded by abandonment of partition and of Zionist plans to set up a Jewish state, an Arab-Jewish armistice would “serve no useful purpose.”
