Haig’s Mideast Visit Still Uncertain, JTA, Jan. 6, 1982.

Ephraim EvronThe possibility that Secretary of State Alexander Haig will go to the Middle East after attending the NATO Foreign Ministers meeting in Brussels next Monday “remains under consideration,” the State Department said today. Department spokesman Dean Fischer said he still has “nothing firm to announce” and could not say how long the Secretary will be in Europe. However, he said, Haig met today with the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Samuel Lewis, and will meet tomorrow with Alfred Atherton, the U.S. Ambassador to Egypt.

Fischer said the two envoys will be in Washington for the better part of this week but are not expected to hold press conferences. They have been representing the U.S. in the Israeli-Egyptian autonomy talks.
