Israel Offers Peace

Israeli leader Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat meet in Washington, D.C. to sign documents that promise to end their conflict.

The Oslo Accord

Yasser Arafat

Arafat stated:

That the “PLO recognize[s] the right of the State of Israel to exist in peace and security,” “accepts UN Security Council resolutions 242 and 338, commits to a peaceful resolution of the conflict, renounces the use of terrorism and other acts of violence,” affirms that the articles in the Palestinian covenant that deny Israel’s right to exist “are now inoperative and no longer valid.” And “undertakes to submit to the Palestinian National Council… the necessary changes in regard to the Palestinian Covenant.”
