April 1, 2002 15 Killed in Haifa Restaurant

The suicide bombing in Haifa was at the Matza restaurant, which is Jewish-owned but managed by Israeli Arabs in a mixed city that has long prided itself on how well the two communities mingle.  “The city of Haifa is well known as a city where people live together, coexist, living side by side,” said the mayor, Amran Mitzna.  “And, as you can see today, they suffer together.”  Because of the Passover holiday, the restaurant was crowded, with about 40 people inside, witnesses said.  The blast caused the roof of the restaurant to collapse into shreds of metal and wire, and many of the victims suffered from burns.
