1937 Peel Commission and British Colonial Secretary on Transjordan

Transjordan and West Bank of PalestineThe Peel Commission, in its report of 1937, stated:

If fully developed, it (Transjordan) could hold a much larger population than it does at present.”

Mr. Ormsby Gore, then British Colonial Secretary, told the Permanent Mandates Commission of the League of Nations at its 32nd session in 1937:

“There is in Transjordan room for the resettlement of considerable numbers of people on land capable of earning a better livelihood than that which they could at present scratch from the hills of Palestine.”
